When You Keep Thinking About What You Could Have Done Differently

You may be dealing with anxiety, depression, loss, or a major life transition while also getting caught in thoughts about the past.

You might replay decisions, think about regrets, struggle in relationships, or find yourself overthinking situations you cannot change. Even when you want things to feel different, it can be hard to know what your next step should be.

I’m Trisha Naughton, LCSW. I provide therapy in Port Jefferson and online throughout New York State for adults navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, life transitions, and relationship concerns.

Why Work With Me

I have more than 10 years of experience supporting adults through emotional challenges, loss, trauma, relationship concerns, and major changes in their lives.

My approach is gentle and grounded in the therapeutic relationship. I am not here to tell you what to do. I help you make your own connections, come to your own understanding, and make the choices that feel best for you.

I work especially well with clients who want a therapist who can be present with difficult emotions without judgment while helping them better understand themselves.

Mutual respect is important to me and is an important part of the work we do together.

My Approach to Therapy

I begin by being present with you and holding space for whatever emotions come up.

Together, we may explore where certain thoughts or reactions come from, notice patterns that continue to show up, and help you make your own connections.

I draw from psychodynamic therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and a strengths-based perspective. I adjust my approach depending on the person rather than following one rigid way of working.

The goal is to help you come to your own understanding, observe and reframe thoughts in healthier ways, and make your own best choices.

What Working With Me Is Like

In sessions, I am gentle, supportive, validating, and insight-focused.

I may be more direct once we have built a strong relationship and it feels helpful, but I do not believe therapy should be about telling you what to do.

We may talk about anxiety, grief, past experiences, relationships, boundaries, regret, or thoughts that keep repeating.

Over time, change may look like stepping back and observing a thought, reframing it in a healthier way, and feeling clearer about the choices that are right for you.

Getting To Know Me

I have more than 10 years of experience and have worked in outpatient settings supporting people affected by substance use and domestic violence. I now work in private practice.

My own life has included significant loss, so I know how hard it can be to pick yourself up and dust yourself off. I also believe we are always works in progress.

Outside of being a therapist, I sing in a band, enjoy being silly, and love spending time in nature.
