When You Feel a Sense of Doom or Little Control

You may be struggling to keep up with daily tasks while feeling a sense of “doom,” or like you have little control over yourself and the direction your life is going.

You may also struggle to identify how you are feeling, which can make it harder to seek out support or feel truly understood by the most important people in your life.

I’m Taylor DeNaro, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with 8 years of experience, licensed in New York. I provide therapy in Port Jefferson and online throughout New York State.

Why Work With Me

I work best with clients who are trying to parse out how they show up in their relationships.

You may want to improve relationships, seek out relationships, learn how to communicate how you feel to the people you love, navigate working relationships with coworkers or a boss, build self-esteem, set boundaries with family members, stop rumination, or learn how to cope with symptoms of PTSD.

My style is whatever “down to earth” looks like. I try to make it known that I do not know more about the human experience than anyone else does. I like to laugh, smile, and use some humor in session when it calls for it.

The work is not about me telling you who you should be. It is about helping you break down your goals and get creative about the small steps you choose to take toward a life you feel content with, or even better, proud of.

Clients tend to choose me because I create a safe environment where difficult thoughts and feelings can be explored. I can be candid, and my personality tends to shine through while still maintaining professional boundaries.

My Approach to Therapy

My approach is direct, gentle, insight-focused, practical, supportive, and validating.

In the first few sessions, I tend to ask a lot of questions. I really want to get to know you. I may come off as pretty direct, but mostly curious. I want to explore your worldview, how you feel about your relationships, and what has been hard to say out loud.

I use CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and DBT when helpful. In plain language, that means we may look at your thoughts, feelings, patterns, coping skills, communication, boundaries, and how you respond when life feels overwhelming.

I help people figure out the many things they hold on to and how those things end up running their life or minds.

What Working With Me Is Like

Therapy with me is honest, human, and collaborative.

I provide a safe space where you can explore the difficult thoughts and feelings you may have been afraid to say out loud. When you do, I listen, validate, and offer tools to help process those feelings.

I also see myself as a supportive witness to the very real and deep feelings clients often do not express anywhere else. It is paramount to hold clients with dignity in moments of vulnerability, and I think clients can feel that care and sensitivity.

I am a good fit for clients who are naturally self-reflective, eager to apply tools outside of session, or in the place where they know they want to change something but are unsure how to start.

I may not be the best fit for clients looking for primary support for substance use disorder.

Getting To Know Me

I have been practicing therapy since I graduated with my master’s degree in 2018. I first worked in outpatient substance use through Family Service League. I later moved to Brooklyn and worked in OMH Community Behavioral Health Clinics until 2025, when I obtained my clinical license and moved toward private practice.

Outside of being a therapist, I love music, art museums, reading, and anything creative. I spend my free time doing crafts like Book Nooks, Legos, or coloring with alcohol markers. I also spend a lot of time with friends and family, visit my best friend in Philadelphia when I can, and play Dungeons and Dragons with friends as a fun way to stay in touch with imagination as an adult.

My father passed away at the end of 2020, and that experience in my early 20s has informed how I understand the complex feelings of grief. It has absolutely made me a better friend and therapist.

Begin Therapy in Port Jefferson

Starting therapy can be a place to say the things you have been afraid to say out loud.

You do not have to know exactly how to explain everything before you begin. We can start by getting curious about what you are carrying, what keeps repeating, and what small steps may help you move toward a life that feels more content, clear, and maybe even something you can feel proud of.

I offer therapy in Port Jefferson and virtually throughout New York State.

If you know you want to change something but are unsure how to start, we can get curious about that together.
