When You Want Things to Change, But Don’t Know How

Life may feel overwhelming, with constant thoughts of “I should be doing more” or “I should be doing better.” You may want things to change but struggle to figure out how.

Struggling can look different from day to day. You may have trouble getting out of bed, feel irritated with people you care about, lose motivation for things you once enjoyed, or feel like your thoughts are controlling you.

I’m Stephanie Taylor Szabo, LMSW. I provide therapy in Port Jefferson and online throughout New York State for young adults and LGBTQ+ clients navigating anxiety, depression, addiction and recovery, life transitions, and changes they want to make in their lives.

Why Work With Me

Many of the people I work with want to make sustainable changes, reach goals, connect more with others, and feel more in control of their thoughts and actions.

I am empathetic and provide a safe, judgment-free space where you can feel all the feelings and process them together without fear of being judged.

I work especially well with clients who want extra support, validation of their lived experiences, and help changing negative habits into healthier ones.

If you are looking for couples or family counseling, I may not be the right fit.

My Approach to Therapy

I help by offering a safe and nonjudgmental space where you can express yourself and process feelings as they come up.

I ask thoughtful questions to better understand what you are experiencing and help you reach your own conclusions through talking it out. Safety and security are always a priority in our work together.

I draw from Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy based on your needs.

The goal is to help you build confidence, strengthen your support systems, develop coping skills, and feel more in control of your thoughts and actions.

What Working With Me Is Like

In sessions, I am supportive, validating, and focused on helping you better understand yourself.

We may talk through what has been happening, explore the thoughts and feelings underneath it, and notice habits or patterns that may no longer be helping you.

I will ask questions and give you space to talk things out rather than telling you what you should do.

Over time, change may look like building confidence, feeling more in control of your thoughts and actions, strengthening your coping skills, and replacing negative habits with healthier ones.

Getting To Know Me

I earned my Master of Social Work from Stony Brook University in 2026. My professional experience includes an internship with Mather Hospital Chemical Dependency Clinic, where I provided individual and group therapy in an outpatient setting.

I also received an Addictions Professional Scholarship from OASAS.

Outside of being a therapist, I enjoy reading fantasy novels, playing Dungeons & Dragons and video games, and going to the movies.
