When You’re Used to Being the Strong One

You may be the one holding everyone together while quietly falling apart. You might be dealing with racing thoughts, anxiety, panic attacks, or high-functioning depression. You may be having difficulty setting boundaries, processing grief, or feeling like you are not doing enough in life.

At night, your mind may go back to what happened during the day, or what occurred in the past. You may find yourself thinking about family dynamics, old wounds, cultural expectations, or the parts of your story that nobody really talks about.

I’m Kemylee Brisport, LMSW, CTP. I provide therapy in Port Jefferson and online throughout New York State for adults, couples, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, women, and professionals navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, cultural stress, and self-worth.

Why Work With Me

A lot of my clients are used to showing up, smiling, and masking what people may not see beneath the surface. They may be carrying anxiety, people-pleasing, survival patterns, intergenerational trauma, or pressure to hold everything together. For couples, the work often centers on communication issues, building trust, and strengthening intimacy.

My style is supportive and validating, but I also gently challenge patterns. I provide education, explain things in simple terms, and give clients tools, resources, homework, or something to reflect on between sessions.

If you like to be challenged and want feedback, homework, and space to explore culture or spirituality in treatment, this may be a good fit. If you are seeking only client-centered therapy and do not want to be challenged, this may not be the right fit.

My Approach to Therapy

I help you slow down and look at what has been driving you: the anxiety, the people-pleasing, the survival patterns you have been carrying for years.

Together, we uncover what lies beneath it all: the wounds, the inner critic, and the family dynamics nobody wants to talk about. The goal is for you to stop just surviving and start healing on your own terms.

I use client-centered therapy, CBT, DBT, IFS, mindfulness, and some psychodynamic work. I also explore your culture and, if agreed upon, can incorporate spirituality into treatment. It all starts with you finally having a safe space where you do not have to perform, and where you are truly seen and heard.

What Working With Me Is Like

In sessions, I meet clients where they are. I tend to follow what they are seeking while also challenging their thinking in a gentle, supportive way.

You can expect practical tools, education, reflection, and sometimes homework to reinforce the work between sessions. I want clients to walk away with something they can practice, read, or think about during the week.

We may look at boundaries, grief, anxiety, panic attacks, self-worth, relationships, workplace stress, cultural expectations, or the survival patterns that helped you get through life but may no longer be serving you.

Over time, clients often start setting boundaries. They feel a weight lifted off their shoulders. They gain confidence, return to school, start their own business, fulfill a passion, or leave relationships that no longer serve them.

Getting To Know Me

I have been in the social work field for 14 years. My background includes inpatient psychiatric care, foster care supervision, family court collaboration, counseling services at Rikers Island, crisis work, developmental disabilities, trauma-informed training, family counseling, and outpatient psychotherapy.

I also work part-time with Black Girl Smiles, facilitating group circles in schools, participating in panel discussions, and leading workshops.

Outside of being a therapist, I find peace in yoga, meditation, and a good book. I love live music, ballet, Broadway shows, opera, museums, travel, and learning about new cultures.

I am also deeply passionate about mental health advocacy and women’s rights. Through organizations like UNA-USA, NGO CSW, NAMI Government Affairs Committee, and NCNW, I advocate for mental health awareness, culturally responsive care, and policy change. At my core, I believe everyone deserves to be heard.
