When You’re Holding It Together, But Something Feels Off

You may be showing up, doing what needs to be done, and being the person others rely on. But internally, something feels off. You might be overthinking, reacting more strongly than you want to, or feeling on edge without fully understanding why.

Part of you understands what’s happening. But in the moment, something else takes over.

I’m Janice Martin, LCSW, with more than 30 years of experience. I provide in-person therapy in Port Jefferson and online therapy throughout New York State.

Why Work With Me

Many of the people I work with are used to being the strong ones. They are helpers by nature. Parents, professionals, caregivers, people others rely on. They show up for everyone else, even when they feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or unsure of themselves underneath it all.

At Lightpath Counseling, you don’t have to hold it together. Therapy is not about fixing what is broken. It’s about helping you understand yourself differently, so new choices start to feel possible.

If you’re looking for quick answers or surface-level strategies, this may not be the right fit. If you want a space that feels steady, honest, and deeply human, this is where the work begins.

My Approach to Therapy

The therapy relationship is unlike any other. It’s a space where you can talk solely about yourself and be heard, without judgment, without pressure, and without needing to explain everything perfectly.

When someone finally has that kind of space, something shifts. Patterns become clearer. Emotions feel less overwhelming. Reactions start to make sense.

I don’t start with techniques. I start with you. We use different approaches when they’re helpful, but they are tools, not scripts. What matters is understanding what is happening for you in a way that actually makes sense.

Some sessions are more practical. Others go deeper. The focus is on helping you build awareness, respond instead of react, and begin to trust yourself differently.

What Working With Me Is Like

We begin with what is happening for you now. Not to correct it, but to understand it.

You don’t have to perform, defend, or explain yourself to be accepted. You can slow down and speak honestly, even if you’re not sure how to put things into words yet.

We pay attention to patterns as they show up. The way you react. The way you speak to yourself. The moments that feel bigger than they should. Not with criticism, but with curiosity.

Over time, you start to notice something shifting. You may notice a pause before reacting. A softer inner voice. A different choice in a familiar situation.

Clients often say things like, “I don’t react the way I used to,” “I trust my decisions now,” or “I’m not as hard on myself.” Those shifts may seem small. They are not.

Getting To Know Me

I was drawn to this work because I saw how deeply people want to be truly heard.

So many people carry parts of themselves that feel unseen or misunderstood. I have always felt connected to helping someone feel understood without judgment or pressure to be anything other than who they are.

What feels most true in my work is not technique or diagnosis. It’s the moment when someone feels truly seen. When they realize they don’t have to perform or explain themselves to be accepted.

I believe people already carry strength, humor, tenderness, and resilience. Sometimes they just need it reflected to them.

When You Feel Nothing Changes

If part of you is tired of going in circles, that matters. If you’re at the point where you almost make a decision and then pull yourself back, that matters too. Lightpath Counseling Group offers in-person therapy in Port Jefferson and virtual sessions across New York. You don’t have to have the right words. You don’t have to have it figured out.
