When It Feels Hard to Be Present in Your Own Life
You may be getting through the day, but not really feeling present. Your mood may shift quickly. It may be hard to concentrate. You may find yourself avoiding things you know need your attention. At night, your mind may go to loss, financial issues, family conflict, or work stress. During the day, you may feel irritable, disconnected, or unable to enjoy life the way you used to.
For many of the people I work with, the hard part is not only what is happening. It feels like you cannot be emotionally present in your own life.
I’m Cori L. Kapopoulos, LCSW. I provide therapy in Port Jefferson and online therapy throughout New York State for adults, couples, women, and professionals who want support with anxiety, depression, relationship conflict, grief, and work-related stress.
Why Work With Me
Many of the people I work with are dealing with stress that has started to affect how they feel, communicate, work, and connect with the people around them. They may want to gain insight into unhealthy communication, conflict, or relational patterns. They may want coping skills, improved quality of life, and a place where they can open up and process difficult emotions.
My style is honest and approachable. I take a collaborative approach to develop strategies that are practical for clients. I also offer a safe space to open up and process difficult emotions.
If you are open to collaborative, solution-focused therapy that is nurturing and supportive, this may be a good fit. If you prefer structured, assignment-driven therapy, this may not be the right fit.
My Approach to Therapy
I help by allowing you space to speak honestly and feel your feelings. Together, we can look at what has been happening in your relationships, work, family, or internal world. We may explore communication patterns, conflict, grief, stress, mood changes, avoidance, or the places where life has started to feel harder than it used to.
I use CBT, ACT, and client-centered therapy. These approaches help us build insight, develop coping skills, and create practical strategies that support our everyday lives.
The work is collaborative. I will support decisions and offer feedback. Together, we will work to resolve issues and get back to living a life you look forward to and enjoy.
What Working With Me Is Like
In sessions, I am direct, gentle, insight-focused, practical, supportive, and validating. I provide a warm and compassionate environment that fosters a positive therapeutic relationship. This is a place where you can speak honestly, feel your feelings, and process difficult emotions without holding everything in.
We may look at patterns in how you communicate, where conflict keeps showing up, or what makes it hard to feel emotionally present. We may also focus on coping skills that help you manage anxiety, depression, grief, work stress, or relationship strain.
Over time, clients often begin to feel lighter. They smile more. They laugh more. They start getting back to living a life they look forward to and enjoy.
Getting To Know Me
I have worked in behavioral health for 18 years, including the last 10 years as a social worker. My background includes integrated healthcare, outpatient and inpatient rehab, clinical leadership, and serving as a social work practicum instructor.
I bring experience, steadiness, and a practical approach to this work. I also know therapy has to feel human. People need room to talk about the deep, complicated parts of life without losing access to warmth, honesty, and even humor when it fits.
Outside of being a therapist, I consider myself a down-to-earth person who enjoys humor while also respecting the deep, complicated parts of life. I enjoy family, friends, art, and music.
