When You Don’t Feel Valued and Negative Thoughts Take Over
You may be struggling in a relationship and feeling like you are not valued. You may focus more on what went wrong than what went well, question yourself, or notice that negative thoughts are affecting your confidence.
Day-to-day, you might replay conversations, react quickly, feel overwhelmed, or have difficulty stepping back from a situation. Even when part of you knows there may be another way to see things, your mind may keep returning to the negative.
I’m Barbra Canale-DiGiovanna, LCSW. I provide therapy in Port Jefferson and online throughout New York State for adolescents, adults, couples, and older adults navigating anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, low confidence, and negative thinking patterns.
Why Work With Me
Many of the people I work with are dealing with relationship concerns, anxiety, depression, or thoughts that diminish their confidence and self-perception.
They may focus more on the negative, have difficulty recognizing their strengths, or react before they have time to pause. Clients often come in wanting to improve relationships, feel less overwhelmed, and experience greater inner peace.
My approach is compassionate, strengths-based, client-centered, and practical. I provide a supportive and nurturing environment where you are valued, can feel understood, and have space to heal and grow.
If you want support identifying triggers, setting boundaries, reframing negative thoughts, and building healthier coping strategies, this may be a good fit.
My Approach to Therapy
I help by creating a space where you can talk honestly about what you are experiencing while feeling supported and understood.
Together, we may identify triggers, explore underlying concerns, notice relationship patterns, and look at how negative thoughts affect your confidence, emotions, and reactions.
I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Play Therapy when appropriate. In practical terms, this may include reframing cognitive distortions, practicing relaxation techniques, setting boundaries, and developing coping strategies you can use outside of therapy.
The goal is to help you build confidence, improve relationships, and respond to difficult situations with greater awareness rather than becoming pulled into the same patterns.
What Working With Me Is Like
In sessions, I am direct and gentle while also providing support, validation, practical tools, and honest feedback.
I actively listen, focus on your strengths, and help you understand the thoughts and patterns that may be keeping you stuck. At the same time, I may gently challenge negative thinking and help you consider a different perspective.
We may work on relationship concerns, boundaries, self-care, anxiety, depression, confidence, coping strategies, and relaxation techniques.
Over time, change may look like pausing before reacting, focusing less on the negative, making time for self-care, using coping strategies when overwhelmed, and feeling more confident in yourself and your relationships.
Getting To Know Me
I earned my Master of Social Work from Adelphi University in 1994 and have been licensed as an LCSW since 2005.
My professional background includes seven years as a middle school social worker with the Brentwood Union Free School District. I also worked in private practice with clients aged 10 to 80 and supervised a social work intern.
Outside of being a therapist, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, cooking, travelling, and music.
